Zvuková umělkyně a hudební skladatelka Ryoko Akama přibližuje ve svých kompozicích, které často pracují s psaným textem, estetiku ticha, času a prostoru. Se starými syntezátory ohledává zvukovou performance a kromě toho vytváří také instalace s drobnými objekty a elektronikou. Akama se zabývá kvalitou minimální, reduktivní a abstraktní sonické zkušenosti. Provozuje label melange edition a je spolueditorkou časopisu Reductive Journal. V současnosti je spolu s Montym Adkinsem a Phillipem Thomasem doktorandkou na Univerzitě v Huddersfieldu, kde spoluorganizuje HudHack (DIY elektronický workshop) a re.sound (koncertní série).
David Ferrando Giraut se ve své umělecké tvorbě zaměřuje především na práci s videem a zvukem. Kombinuje několik témat, jako je hybridizace přírodních prvků, vztah technologie a společensko-politických organizací, napětí mezi reprezentací a zobrazovanou realitou. Autor zpochybňuje moderní pojetí temporálnosti a navrhuje hledání kontinuity skrze pojmy transverzality, proustovské reminiscence, úpadku a jeho podobnosti s audiovizuálním záznamem. David Ferrando Girraut je absolventem londýnské Godsmith Colledge. V roce 2010 absolvoval postgraduální kurz LUX Associate Artists Programme v Londýně.
Zabývali jste se již někdy kategorií animace v rozšířeném poli její artikulace?
David: Pracuji s videem od roku 2007. Někdy šlo o jednokanálové video, jindy o součást „video soch" nebo instalací. Ve většině děl hrál podstatnou roli zvuk. Teprve nedávno jsem začal používat i digitální animaci. Poslední věc byla instalace sestávající z velkoformátové projekce animovaných objektů, na míru vyrobeného setu sošných kvadrofonních reproduktorů a čtyřkanálové zvukové stopy. Byl to projekt zabývající se energetickou politikou Španělska, kdy jsem vycházel z výzkumu složeného z rozhovorů s místními experty na danou oblast.
Nikdy jsem se nepovažoval za „animátora" v tradičním slova smyslu a idea „rozšířeného pole" jako hybridizace rozličných disciplín stojí u kořenů mé práce. Zdá se mi, že značná část současné animované produkce – alespoň v oblasti současného umění, což je sféra, ze které pocházím – má až sochařské kvality, ale nevzdává se přitom možností narativu. To mi přijde zajímavé.
Ryoko: Dělala jsem hodně videí, která se zabývala pohybem, změněnou pozorností vůči zaznamenané realitě, lo-fi texturami a exponovala deformace obrazu, jako jsou glitche a twitche. Dalo by se patrně prohlásit, že šlo o podoby animace.
Poslední dobou se zaměřuji jen na zvuk. Nahlížím na elementy Přítomnosti, pohybu a proměny především z hlediska východní filozofie. V mých pracích se odráží spíš implicitně než explicitně, přesto tento materiál hraje v mém uvažování o čase a prostoru významnou roli.
Zdá se, že „animace" je pojmenováním pro vizuální zábavu, ale „animovat" má celou škálu fascinujících významů. Uvažovala jsem, zda svými zvukovými kompozicemi neanimuji situaci nebo zda mé kompozice neumožňují animovat situaci posluchačům.
Začali jste s nějakým konceptem, který pro vás formu tohoto projektu vědomě limitoval?
David: Spolupracovali jsme z geograficky vzdálených míst, bez toho, abychom se spolu setkávali a zkoušeli, což bude až součástí události na PAFu. Nepoužívali jsme navzájem formáty, které by mohly tomu druhému znesnadnit práci.
V úvahách o vizuální stránce projektu jsem se upíral k myšlence, o které píše Gilles Deleuze – myslím, že při tom vychází z Bergsona. Popisuje obrazy skládající se z různých aspektů, které přijímají a vysílají pohyby od jednoho k druhému – trochu na způsob dynamiky akce a reakce, jež vytváří nepřetržitý tok. Tato myšlenka – a úvahy o tom, co se s ní děje ve vztahu k animaci – byla rozhodně zásadní v mém procesu výběru formálních složek vizuální stránky projektu.
Ryoko: Ve své hudební tvorbě hodně pracuji s drobnými pohyby, proměnou a přítomností. Když mě Mark k projektu přizval, poslal mi nějaké poznámky, mezi nimi i následující citát: Čas je proměna; jeho plynutí měříme na základě toho, jak moc se věci mění. (Nadine Gordimer)
Někteří lidé se domnívají, že druh hudby, kterému se věnuji, podmiňuje vertikální poslech nebo bezčasou percepci. Na určité úrovni podněcuje naše zkušenost s pozvolna akumulovanou hudbou abstraktní a neuchopitelné uvědomění si místa, paměti a temporální percepce. Nicméně čas se neustále proměňuje a jednotlivými bloky jeho proměn vždy prochází jistá měnící se struktura, což mě zajímá.
Kompozice Second Nature vychází z toho, co David navrhl jako vizuální téma a cituje Markovy filosofické čmáranice. (:) Často pracuji s delší dobou trvání, což jsem po diskusi s Markem, který byl pro mě zdrojem skvělých nápadů a inspirace, aplikovala také v této práci. Baví mne také limity, rigidita a pravidla, což je zdá se pro většinu umělců 20. a 21. století negativní tabu! Rámce mají svou svobodu a křehkost, která mi přijde zajímavá. Raději chci jediný intenzivní prvek než milion monstrózních reakcí. V rámci zvoleného prvku vytváří má skladba situaci. Doufám, že mé dílo pro Second Nature dostatečně jasně vysvětlí, co tím myslím...
Můžete trochu přiblížit způsob prezentace vašeho projektu?
David: Na začátku bude pouze zvuk, který později doplní jednokanálová video projekce, dvě digitální animace nad sebou: krajina a zátiší, které se vzájemně obsahují a „rámují", v podstatě jako u Magritta. Uvažuji o možném rozšíření této práce v instalaci s vícekanálovou projekcí a sochařskými prvky, možná i hlasovými nahrávkami.
Ryoko: Do situace nás v absolutní tmě uvede pouze zvuk, jak říká David. Chci, aby video a hudba navzájem komunikovaly, nicméně jejich vztah by měl být neutrální. Poté, co video skončí a zvuk ještě chvíli zůstane, by se místnost měla znovu propadnout do hlubin neproniknutelné černoty a zanechat publikum se vzpomínkou (minulost) v přítomnosti.
