In the Light of Laterna Magika
In our country Laterna Magika is associated with the legendary participation of Czechoslovakia in the world exhibition in Brussels in 1958, and later with the theatre intended especially for foreign visitors to Prague. The lecture will attempt to introduce the wider resources of this art genre in the Czech environment, both in the area of avant-garde theatre and show business. Highlighting the international context of Expo 58, the following questions will be discussed: How was it different to the pavilion of the Philips Company and other similar projects by Charles and Ray Eames? Why was it formed as a tool of the state and not as a base for the systematic development of more experimental formats? Finally, the lecture will introduce period and contemporary interpretations of Laterna Magika as a multimedia format, especially in relation to the means of expression of progressive art. Why did the artistic search for Laterna Magika, which lasted 60 years, bring such contradictory results? To what extent is it possible to perceive historical Laterna Magika in the context of the contemplation and practice of the contemporary multimedia artists?
